There are as many opinions on correct Quaker nutrition as there are
Quaker breeders. They vary from the "Pellets have everything they need"
attitude to the "Cook for them as you would your children" opinion.
Most swear by a certain commercial hand feeding formula while some
holdouts continue with their own "secret concoction". Weaning is
handled by some with a rigorous schedule of specific food offerings and
decreasing formula feedings. While others feel that the weaning process
is natural and that each bird is different. These folks believe in
"abundance weaning" and keep many different foods in the cage and just
let nature take it's course. Quaker breeders have, indeed, found great
success with many diverse opinions and approaches.
We have arrived at our practices not through years and years of personal
experience, but, rather, by exhausting our local library and book store
as well as online breeders, websites, articles and news groups. We
certainly don't claim that our way is THE way to do it. However, it
seems to be the general consensus opinion of hundreds of years of
collective breeder and avian vet experience.
Our general approach is based on available research coupled with our
desire to keep our Exotic Flock not only healthy, but happy as well. We
are firm believers in commercial pellet and hand feeding formulations,
which are the result of almost 50 years of scientific approach to avian
nutrition. That said, our birds are not just subjects in an experiment,
but are part of our family. We make every effort to make our feeding
practices fun and enjoyable for them.
