The nursery is situated apart from the aviary in a different room. We like it this way as it allows us to play and interact with the little peepers as often as we like. That way, Fern and Martha can get their "baby fix" whenever they want without constantly disturbing the breeder pairs. We think we're prepared for anything, but isn't that always the case. We invested in high quality equipment that should afford us the opportunity to expand without further purchases, if that's where life takes us.

Because many of our chicks are destined to be breeders, we feel strongly that allowing parents to raise chicks for 3 weeks or so provides the well known immunologic advantages and confers parenting skills that no human can reproduce. We're more interested in producing healthy pets and quality breeders than pulling eggs or chicks early just to squeeze out another clutch that year.

Our brooder is a Petiatric Nursery Hospital NH-IIIB. It supplies more than adequate space for our small aviary. Solid state components with over and under temperature alarms keeps us resting comfortably at night. We also have a Petiatric Nursery Hospital NH-IIIA which we use as a hatcher.

The balance we use is an Ohaus Scout 6010. It is both accurate and precise with a capacity up to 600 grams for adult Quakers and measures down to 0.1 grams to keep track of the very young and even eggs if necessary.

All this equipment is housed in the nursery area of the aviary. It is accessible from a separate entrance after the aviary lights are out so breeders are not disturbed when chicks need late night feedings.

As no bird gets anywhere NEAR our aviary without being tested for Polyoma, PBFD, and Chlamydia, we are confident that all chicks raised are free of disease. This is why we offer a rock solid and written health guarantee.

Kitchen within the nursery with feeding cart. Included are a sink, dishwasher, microwave, disposal, on site hot water heater, and refrigerator and freezer just to the right of this frame.
Hand feeding area with heat lamp, scale, and formula warmer.
Incubation area (which we've never used) is between the kitchen to the left and the hand feeding area to the right. The large freezer and small fridge are also pictured here.
Brooders and weaning cages on the other side of the nursery.
